Do you have Ranidaphobia or are you a Herpetologist? None of these matters as either way you can’t deny the role of frogs in the Ecosystem. Though the ones you can see around you are not that much threatening, however, there are a number of species of frogs who are alarmingly venomous. And, they have the capability to knock down even a human being with the toxin present in its body. This article mentions three of such poisonous frogs in the world:
List Of Toxic Frogs
Let’s have a glance through the below listicles to know the characteristics of five species of frogs that are extremely venomous.
Golden Poison Dart Frogs
The golden dart frog, available on the pacific coast of Columbia mainly, are said to be toxic and not really venomous. Its skin is enriched with alkaloid toxins. It prevents its prey’s power of transmitting impulses through its nerves. In most cases, poison dart frogs use the toxin to protect itself rather than killing its prey. However, it’s estimated that 1mg of poison is capable to kill more or less 10000 mice at a time. This, in turn, can be assumed to knock down 10-20 human beings. Batrachotoxin stored in its skin makes poison dart frog a deterrent to predators. That means they are capable of killing any predator except Liophis Epinephelus, a species of snake, that is resistant to the frog’s poison.
Dyeing Dart Frogs
The Dyeing dart frogs are habitants of the eastern part of the Guiana shield and Venezuela. And, they are poisonous when you consume them. They can produce Pumilio toxins in their bodies as a self-defense mechanism. This capability prevents other predators from considering them as their meals. If mistakenly they are swallowed by other animals, they will die out of immense pain in their stomach and a feeling of discomfort after the frog is digested. The source of their poison is the ants or other insects they feed on in the wild. Hence, Captive dyeing dart frogs are not venomous as they follow a different diet altogether. Another name of this species is poison arrow frogs. They got this name when hunters from rain forest area used to use their skin venom in their arrows to make the shot a sure one for killing their targets.
Phantasmal Poison Arrow Frog
This species is basically from the Andean slopes of central Ecuador. Moreover, they are on the verge of extinction and knowingly they reside in very few places. Very small in size, Phantasmal Poison Arrow Frogs mainly feed on insects like caterpillars, ants, spiders, etc. Their skin has a layer of high toxins. And, the source for the same is the chemicals from each prey. The two milligrams of poison stored in their glands can be fatal for humans.
However, there are few other species like Splash-Back poison frog and Granular Poison frog who is also considered as poisonous species of frogs. The alarming part is that most of them are on the verge of disappearance due to climate change. Hence, the ecosystem is gradually collapsing with their extinction. Before they vanish from our planet, we must take measures to protect them.
